Comic Prototype
The challenge:
Both intentionally and unintentionally, many people feed the wildlife posing risks to both local residents and animals. It is important for people to understand the risks associated with feeding wildlife.
The context and audience:
The goal of this comic is to reach the general public and be accessible to as many audiences as possible. More specifically however, it is important knowledge for people inhabiting a developed area that is situated near large expanses of natural habitat, or people who partake in hobbies in natural settings, for instance, campers and hikers. In creating a comic I hope to also reach the audience of younger individuals as well.
The feeding of animals in an opportunistic, touristic and hobbyist way can lead to potential risks on public safety as well as impact the well being of wildlife. There are numerous risks associated with feeding wildlife, such as imposing unhealthy conditions, spreading of illness, and causing habituation. Each of these risks can affect both people and animals alike.
Despite fairly widespread public postings and advisories regarding the feeding of wildlife, this habit is still present in tourist and hobbyist activities, as well as in completely unintentional actions. It is important to note that though these actions are not conducted with aim to harm, there are still consequences that follow.
Point of View Statement:
An individual unknowingly feeding the animals at the park or at home is more than likely feeding them with good intentions. It would be beneficial for the individual to have an understanding of both public safety and wildlife regulations regarding the feeding of animals.
Learning Objectives:
I had two personal learning objectives in mind whilst developing this comic. My secondary objective being to understand how my behaviours as an individual can impact the natural world. My primary learning objective was discovering how to implement the usage of writing and design as an emotional and educational reach to an audience.
Plan and Ideation:

I have developed a prototype that features approximately 18 panels. The story features a man and his friend meeting for a picnic at the park, when his friend introduces him to the negative impacts of feeding wildlife. I gathered various resources from different sources regarding wildlife.
Principles Applied:
Redundancy Principle: This comic tones down redundancy of text, keeping images simple, using visual aids and keywords.
Signalling Principle: The use of labels and headings of the three main important components are used to signify their importance.
Contiguity Principle: The contiguity principle is prominently utilized for this project as it is in the format of a comics strip. Text and image are combined to form coherency.
