Challenge C: Substantive Post – OER and tools for Art

For this post I wanted to highlight one of my favourite online resources for drawing, AdorkaStock. This is an educational art resource that provides stock images for Gestural Drawings: a drawing, or series of drawings of a human figure in different poses typically drawn within 5 minutes. For drawing programs, it is common to study the human figure from a live model who will sit in the class, providing a series of poses over a short period of time. For individuals unable to access a live model, it is difficult to source free references to utilize in gestural drawing. This is where I think resources like Adorkastock are very useful.

Overall, I think the website does an alright job touching on Mayer’s Principles we have learned in class. As the website is a tool intended for visual use, it caters to a visual learning channel through dual coding. The main resources included within the site are a catalogue, and sketch mode. The catalogue provides an easily filtered image search that would allow the learner to pull specific references for something more broad than a gestural drawing. Sketch mode is essentially a slideshow of poses that rotates over a course of time. Perhaps it is a stretch to compare, but I think the sketch mode would be a good example of segmenting as you can adjust the pace, speed, and apply a variety of filters to customize your learning outcome.

AdorkaStock’s website provides both diverse and dynamic poses, making a fairly interesting gallery. The website uses Creative Commons licensing for their images, and they explicitly state that if their images are used for sharing, modifying or for commercial purposes, to attribute credit back to them. However, if the images are used for reference alone, they state that attribution is appreciated but not necessary.
