During my research on creating educational comics, I have discovered that this visual learning method is incredibly powerful. Not only do comics entertain readers, but they also simplify complex topics and engage them more deeply in the subject. Comics help convey this knowledge through a combination of both imagery and narrative, utilizing important aspects in both design and storytelling.
The visual elements in comics make them more striking and eye-catching, communicating using the power of imagery and design. This approach to education attracts a more diverse audience, as a well crafted comic design will draw in the viewer and effectively guide them from panel to panel.
Narrative and storytelling plays a crucial role in comic strips. It allows readers to connect with the content on a personal and emotional level. The usage of text and narrative also help add complexity and deeper meaning to the information being presented.
Through the combination of both image and text, an educational comic strip will help address complex nuances that are not as easily conveyed in other educational methods. The presentation method of text aids the reader, creating visual cues to help highlight important information or amplify emotion. Using visual metaphor and design complement the text based story telling, enriching the overall learning experience.
I think that this method of learning is very relevant to this course, as comics reduce extraneous cognitive load and promote a more accessible learning experience. The combination of both text and imagery lightens unnecessary text redundancy, and enhances contiguity through each panel. Visual presentation of text serves as effective signalling to the reader, helping convey important information. Additionally, the panels help segment the information, breaking down complex ideas into manageable pieces. In my personal experience, I find learning resources that educate through visual and text based media better convey information, create more of an impact on my education, and stick in my head for longer than text heavy means.
